TOUR ITINERARY

17th – 20th May 2018

CRADLE MOON: 4 NIGHTS

near Johannesburg, South Africa

Situated close to Johannesburg and Pretoria on a 600ha Game Ranch, with giraffe, zebra and antelope wandering freely through the camp and using the swimming pool as a watering hole, Cradle Moon offers a special introduction to Africa.

Day One

Arrive in the late afternoon, and proceed to Cradle Moon in time for dinner

Day Two

In the morning, we will proceed to the historic town of Cullinan for a tour of the Cullinan Diamond Mine, where the world’s largest diamond was discovered. The Cullinan Diamond was donated to the British Monarchy, and forms part of the crown jewels

Choose between surface or underground tour, and enjoy a fascinating insight into Diamond Mining. There will be opportunity to purchase diamond products, including the unique Cullinan Star Cut Diamond.

Day Three

In the morning, we will proceed on a visit to Soweto.  Visit the only street in the world to have been home to two Nobel Peace Prize winners, Nelson Mandela and Bishop Tutu.

Lunch will be served in the restaurant at Cradle Moon, enjoy it at your leisure.

In the afternoon, experience a close up encounter with Africa’s wildlife on a Guided Game Drive

 

Day Four

Enjoy a tour of the beautiful city of Pretoria, the Administrative Capital of South Africa known as the Jacaranda City for its jacaranda lined streets.

We will visit places of interest including the Union Buildings, and the Voortrekker Monument, a National Heritage Site, which depicts the history of the Voortrekkers, who left the Cape and ventured onto the interior in the early 1800’s

 

21st – 23rd May 2018

SPIONKOP LODGE, LADYSMITH: 3 NIGHTS

Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa

Set against the backdrop of the Drakensberg Mountains, on a 700ha game ranch, this beautifully restored Colonial style Lodge is situated on the site of the headquarters of General Sir Redvers Buller during the siege of Ladysmith in the South African War of 1899-1902. Situated in beautiful surroundings, this Lodge offers comfort, class, and a sense of history

Day Five

After a leisurely breakfast, we will take a scenic drive across the open grasslands of the Highveld, down the rugged Drakensberg Escarpment into the rolling hills of Kwa-Zulu Natal, to our next destination, Spionkop Lodge. On arrival, you will have time to relax, settle in to your accommodation, and enjoy the beautiful surroundings.

Day Six

We will spend the day visiting farms, enjoying personal interaction with the farming community, and seeing a variety of the best farms in the district. The locals are keen to welcome the New Zealanders and talk farming. In the evening we will get together with the farmers for a traditional South African braai [or barbecue], and a good social time.

Day Seven

Enjoy spectacular scenery on a tour of the rugged Drakensberg Mountains.

Day Eight

In the morning, learn about the fascinating history of South Africa and visit the site of the famous Boer War battle of Spionkop. The battle was fought when General Buller was attempting to relieve the siege of Ladysmith. Three well known personalities who went on to have a significant impact on world events were present at the battle. Winston Churchill was with the British forces, Mahatma Ghandi served as a stretcher bearer, and Louis Botha, the future Prime Minister of South Africa, was in command of the Boer forces. Raymond Heron will bring it all to life with eloquent commentary

After lunch proceed through the beautiful Natal Midlands to our next destination

24th – 26th May 2018

IMPALA BEND, ASHBURTON: 3 NIGHTS

Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa

Situated in the Mpushini Conservancy, Impala Lodge has a rustic charm and relaxed, friendly atmosphere. The personal involvement of the owners and neighbours, who pitch in to help with the meals, makes you feel at home and amongst friends. The feeding of game in the morning and evening attracts a wide variety of game to the camp, including zebra, impala and the rare nyala.

Day Eight continued...

Arrive from Spionkop Lodge and settle in to your accommodation.

In the evening enjoy a dinner at the Boma, and be entertained by campfire tales from Garth Carpenter, a former Game Warden, with tales of his encounters with man eating lions

Day Nine

The day will be spent visiting farms in the area, where you will once again see a variety of top farms.

Day Ten

We will spend the day visiting the Royal Agricultural Show in Pietermaritzburg. The show, the largest in the country, has been held since 1851. With impressive displays of machinery, livestock, stalls and entertainment, it is a great opportunity for an in depth look at the South African farming industry

Day Eleven

In the morning, we will visit the Birds of Prey Sanctuary near Ashburton, where you will see an impressive array of raptors. Injured birds are brought in to the centre, where they are treated for their injuries, and if sufficiently recovered they are rehabilitated back into the wild. If not, they are cared for at the centre. We will then proceed down to the charming coastal town of Umhlanga Rocks. On the way we will stop at the Valley of 1000 Hills for lunch and a chance for curio shopping

27th May- 28th May 2018

Overlooking the Indian Ocean in the idyllic coastal resort of Umhlanga Rocks, near Durban, the Lodge is conveniently situated within easy reach of the beach, restaurants, and shops. On arrival, you may wish to take a late afternoon walk along the beachfront, and enjoy the rolling waves and stunning beaches

In the evening, we will dine out at one of the many restaurants in Umhlanga Rocks

Day Twelve

The day has been set aside as a free day for you to explore this beautiful coastal area, visit Durban, take a swim in the Indian Ocean, go shopping, or to simply just sit back and relax

Our transport will be available to take us to our destinations of choice

VICTORIA FALLS HOTEL: 2 NIGHTS

One of the original ‘Seven Wonders of the World’, the spectacular Falls, known by the locals as ‘the smoke that thunders’, is even more impressive in real life than in the photos. Victoria Falls is also one of the world’s major adventure tourism destinations, with a host of adventure activities on offer.

Day Thirteen

We will board an early flight to Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, and arrive in time for lunch.

In the afternoon, you will visit one of the true wonders of the world, the Victoria Falls.

In the evening, experience a taste of local cuisine and tribal dancing at the Boma Dinner.

Day Fourteen

In the morning, there will be opportunity for an Elephant Back Safari. This is an amazing experience, as you enjoy a view of the bush from atop these beautiful creatures

In the afternoon, relax on a boat cruise on the mighty Zambezi River, and enjoy the beauty of an African sunset over the river

In the evening, dinner will be at the excellent restaurant at our hotel

Day Fifteen

In the late morning, those wishing to proceed on the helicopter flight will have the opportunity to view the Falls from the air, a spectacular sight

31st May – 2nd June 2018

Situated in one of the top wildlife areas, with the largest concentration of Elephants in Africa, this Lodge is situated on an escarpment, with wonderful views over the Chobe River and Caprivi Strip. It offers luxury and a friendly, personal service.
